Agri- and permaculture for food security
and climate change

Regenerative agricultural design and innovative permaculture solutions for food security and climate change

Our Goal

HODARI Foundation’s Agriculture Programme aims to address food security and climate change, strengthening refugees’ resilience by promoting regenerative agriculture and permaculture practices, ensuring access to healthy, nutritious food and creating livelihood opportunities for all. Specifically, this programs aims to support refugee farmers, malnourished children, breastfeeding and pregnant mothers.

Why We Do This

Uganda is experiencing significant impacts of climate change, including changing weather patterns, drop in water levels, and increased frequency of extreme weather events like floods and drought. The social economic impacts are making refugee and host communities more vulnerable.

What We Do

  • Mushroom cultivation and training,
  • Vegetable and permaculture cultivation and training,
  • Constructing Agri-Tech centre &  home-based irrigation schemes,
  • Construct community food storage facilities,
  • Promoting agro-processing and livestock management,
  • Promoting gender access to communal-owned lands and water sources,
  • Facilitating low-cost agricultural loans for refugee farmers through Agro-finance institutions,
  • Training in modern food production, food safety and post harvest handling.
  • Training on sustainable land management

Impact

With support from Nourish all, we have trained 10 mushroom farmers in spawn multiplication. With funding from WFP co-funded by Embassy of Denmark we were able to establish a Mushroom Spawn Laboratory in Kyaka II. We have trained 100 farmers in oyster mushroom cultivation and were proudly selected in East Africa under WFP Sprout program to attend the DTU NextGen programme in Copenhagen. With support from Uganda Biodiversity, we have established a 2-acre demonstration site for sustainable land management and conservation agriculture where over 70 farmers have come to learn and practice the knowledge on their households.
